Bridgeton

Leave it to Netflix to release yet another original that I’ve managed to binge in basically a single day. Bridgeton is a victorian tale about the families in London’s high society during the wedding market season. It mainly follows one of the more popular families – the Bridgeton family and their daughter Daphne who is looking for an eligible husband on the marriage market. Now while normally something like this would not appeal to me at all, I found myself hooked with the storyline, the characters, the style, the music and the mysterious character Lady Whistedown who is basically Gossip Girl if she lived in the 1800s.

Even though I haven’t seen the show Downton Abbey, I imagine Bridgeton would be a cross between that and Gossip Girl which is a show I’ve watched multiple times. The show is also produced by Shonda Rhimes who has produced many popular TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and many others so it’s no doubt that this show has hooked many. Another thing that I love about the show is the diversity. You would think that a show that takes place in the 1800s would be predominately white but Bridgeton almost ignores the fact that minorities didn’t hold titles or interacted with white people which is very refreshing. While the two main families are white, the main love interest, the Queen, and a couple of the side characters are people of color. You also see men and women of color in the background at the balls and events throughout the show. It’s nice to see a show with diverse characters where the color of their skin is not a part of the storyline.

If you are looking for your next Netflix binge then give Bridgeton a chance and I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Trust me, as soon as you hear the String Quartet version of Thank U, Next you’ll be hooked.
